Install Windows Server 2012 on HP DL 380 G5

Form HP compatibility matrix installing Windows Server 2012 on HP DL 380 G5 is not supported, but it does not mean that it doesn't work. After installing the OS, ILO and SAS P400 controller drivers were missing:

In order to install the missing drivers, I've downloaded HP Service Pack for Proliant 2013.02 and started the installation. HP Smart Update Manager has detected missing drivers for ILO, but has reported dependency error for SAS/SATA event notification service and online rom flash component for P400 controller:

After deselecting the "problematic" components that were dependent from P400 controller, HP SUM has successfully installed the other selected components.
Driver for HP Smart Array P400 controller for Windows Server 2012 can be downloaded from here . The installation package will not allow you to install the driver automatically (from setup), so I have extracted the driver first and updated the Smart Array P400 controller "manually" from Device Manager. After updating the Smart Array P400 controller driver, I have started the HP SUM again and there were no dependencies errors for SAS/SATA event notification service and online flash component for P400, so those two were selected for installation and were installed successfully.
Now, the system was having all components up to date:

Note: For HP System Management Homepage to work properly with SNMP, install SNMP feature and enable public community name READ ONLY right for localhost.

  1. Can you provide any additional steps you used to install windows server 2012? My DL380 G5 will not create and partition the drive to do the installation even when manually adding the P400 driver. How did you prepare the drive to install on a DL380 G5? Any details you can provide would be appreciated.

  2. Have you created logical drive (F8 ORCA), before booting to Windows Server setup ?

  3. yes I have 2 disks and created a RAID 1 array. I then manually added the server 2012 P400 driver during the installation however I continue to get an error that Windows cannot see or create a partition every time I try to select the disk. I've tried to manually create a partition with diskpart with no luck as well. I can make and delete partitions but the windows installer still cannot proceed. What driver did you add during installation?

  4. Hmm, very strange ... I was using the native driver from windows setup, and I was not injection the P400 driver. Can you try to boot with Windows Server 2012 installation CD without manually adding the P400 driver ?

  5. The error I get after loading the 2008 x64 or 2012 P400 driver when selecting the visible volume in the GUI is, "We couldn't create a new partition or locate an existing one." I can manually delete and recreate and format partitions from the setup GUI but I cannot click NEXT successfully to proceed with the installation.

  8. I am running into the same problem as itguy. We have a server of the same model that will not accept the 2008 storage drivers from the HP support site. Not sure what to do but I have a feeling we might have a slightly different storage controller.

  9. Hi Tyson,

Can you see the logical drive in Windows Server Setup, previously created with F8 (ORCA) ?

  10. I have the same problem of itguy2013 and Tyson, the controller is the P400i and I can't see the drive in windows 2012 r2 installation, even if I put the correct drivers for that controller.
    Any idea?

  11. Hi Gabriele,

I haven't tried to install Windows server 2012 R2, in this article I'm showing installation of Windows Server 2012 (without R2). I've managed to install the OS with native controller drivers, without injecting the P400 drivers. Have you created the logical drive in ORCA (f8) ?
From which media did you run the os setup (cdrom, external USB Drive) ?

  12. Hi Vladimir, I've created the logical drive (raid 0+1) and I'm trying to start the installation of W2k12 r2 from cdrom drive.
    Thanks a lot

  13. Can you see and select the logical drive from setup wizard ?

    ReplyDelete
  14. no, I can't see any drive there, but now I found the solution :-)
Go into the BIOS, Advanced Options,Restore Default Settings\Erase Boot Partition and confirm.
Now I can see the logical drive in windows setup, and the installation started without any problem :)
    Thanks again

  18. Hi Jose,

Have you tried to install the OS from CD/DVD Rom ? Have you checked if there are any USB thumb drives connected on server ? If you have any USB thumb drives connected, remove them before proceeding with os installation ...

The link to the Smart Array P400 driver is not working anymore. Can you be so kind to point me to the correct download file? I got the driver working for the iLO 2 controller but not the Scsi controller.

    Thanks!

    3. Hi Vladimir, that link has now expired. Do you know where the driver is now, or do you know which SPP has it in?
      Thanks,

  22. Hi,

Thanks! I noticed that the server does in fact have the P400 smart array controller driver installed. But it is still showing a missing driver for a: SCSI Controller.

I am trying HSUM with a 2014.02 SPP - hopefully that will take care of it.

  23. My Proliant would not get past the windows install as it said it was missing drivers. I tried everything but nothing went through, so I just installed Server 2012 on a random PC and imaged it and restored it onto the Server.. lol
